Wall finishes for quantum computing and advanced silicon facilities

Quantum facilities can combine laboratories, technical-support rooms, cryogenic systems, precision optical equipment, control electronics and advanced device research. The wall finish must be selected for the exact room and approved as part of the wider environmental, fire and engineering strategy.

Quantum Hardware Laboratories

Selected wall areas in research spaces used to build, test or operate quantum hardware, where the approved finish specification permits bonded PVC-u.

Cryogenic Support Areas

Durable internal wall finishes in supporting spaces around cryogenic infrastructure, subject to the room design, safety strategy and service interfaces.

Laser and Photonics Laboratories

Cleanable wall finishes for selected laboratory areas around optical benches, laser systems and technical services where the approved specification allows.

Advanced Silicon and Device Labs

Wall-cladding routes for selected semiconductor, device-development and advanced-silicon spaces where material suitability is confirmed by the project team.

Control and Electronics Rooms

Maintainable internal wall finishes around racks, instrumentation, control equipment and supporting technical infrastructure.

Ancillary and Circulation Areas

Durable wall finishes for corridors, preparation spaces, technical-support rooms and other high-use areas within research facilities.

The wall finish supports the laboratory fit-out — it does not replace specialist systems

Advanced research facilities can require highly controlled environments. IMPACTPRO can form the internal finished surface in suitable areas, but specialist laboratory performance must be delivered by the relevant project systems.

The wall-cladding package can contribute a smooth bonded PVC-u surface, large-format sheet planning, project-specific detailing and drawing-led supply and installation.

Vibration isolation, electromagnetic shielding, RF control, specialist earthing, cleanroom classification, particle control, environmental conditioning, ESD control, fire strategy, laser safety, cryogenic safety, temperature, humidity, pressure and ventilation remain specialist design requirements.

Project-specific verification is essential: IMPACTPRO should only be specified where the selected finish, adhesive, jointing route, substrate and interfaces are accepted against the room's cleanroom, ESD, fire, shielding and environmental requirements.

Plan the wall around the equipment, openings and services

Quantum and advanced-silicon spaces can have dense service routes, instrumentation, access panels, wall-mounted controls, viewing panels and specialist equipment. Sheet layout should be agreed before fabrication and cutting begins.

IMPACTPRO project formats are based around 1220 mm sheet widths. Typical heights across the range can include 2440, 2800 and 3050 mm, subject to selected finish and current availability.

Doors and viewing panels should be checked against vertical sheet joints. Where suitable, a joint can align with an opening jamb rather than cutting through the opening. Sockets, controls and service penetrations should be kept clear of vertical sheet joints where practicable.

  • 1220 mm sheet width.
  • Typical project heights can include 2440, 2800 and 3050 mm, subject to selected finish and availability.
  • Profile or welded detailing may be available depending on the selected IMPACTPRO finish and project specification.
  • Fully bonded installation to a suitable substrate.

Coordinate the wall finish before scientific equipment fixes the room layout

Once benches, cryogenic equipment, optical systems and service containment are installed, access to wall interfaces can become restricted. Early coordination helps avoid unnecessary joints, awkward cuts and avoidable return visits.

Doors, Viewing Panels and Frames

Opening positions should be checked against the sheet set-out so joints do not cut through doors or glazed/viewing panels. Where suitable, joints can be aligned to jambs and reveal details planned before fitting.

Services and Containment

Cable containment, pipework, gases, vacuum lines, controls and other penetrations need agreed positions before the sheet layout is finalised. Specialist sealing and fire stopping remain separate project responsibilities.

Equipment and Bench Interfaces

Fixed benches, cabinets, control racks and scientific equipment can restrict access. Coordinate wall finish extents and installation sequence around equipment zones.

Corners and Returns

Internal and external corners should use the selected system's approved profile or formed detail, taking account of room geometry and cleaning or maintenance requirements.

Floor and Ceiling Junctions

Wall-cladding terminations should coordinate with the approved floor, coving, ceiling and any cleanroom or specialist-partition interfaces.

Specialist Envelope Interfaces

Where shielding, cleanroom partitions or other specialist enclosures form part of the laboratory, the PVC-u finish must terminate without compromising those systems.

Questions project teams ask before specifying laboratory wall cladding

What wall finish can be used in a quantum computing laboratory?

The correct finish depends on the room function and the approved laboratory design. Fire strategy, environmental control, cleanroom or contamination requirements, ESD, shielding, cleaning chemistry, substrate and equipment interfaces can all affect the wall specification. PVC-u wall cladding should only be used where the project team has confirmed it is suitable for that room.

Is IMPACTPRO a cleanroom-certified wall system?

No blanket cleanroom certification is claimed for IMPACTPRO. Where a laboratory has an ISO cleanroom classification or another controlled-environment requirement, the selected wall finish, adhesive, joints, corners and interfaces must be assessed and accepted against the project specification.

Can IMPACTPRO be used in advanced silicon or semiconductor laboratories?

It can be considered as an internal wall finish in selected advanced-silicon or semiconductor research areas where the project designers confirm the material, fire, contamination-control, chemical, ESD and operational requirements are appropriate.

Does IMPACTPRO provide ESD or electromagnetic shielding?

No. Standard IMPACTPRO wall cladding is not presented as an ESD-control or electromagnetic-shielding system. Where those functions are required they must be delivered and verified by the relevant specialist design and products.

Can PVC-u wall cladding be installed around laboratory services and penetrations?

Yes, where the approved design permits the finish. Service penetrations, containment and controls should be coordinated before cutting. Doors and viewing panels should be checked against the sheet set-out; where suitable, vertical joints can align with jambs, while sockets and service penetrations should be kept clear of vertical joints where practicable. Specialist sealing and fire stopping remain separate project requirements.

What IMPACTPRO sheet sizes are available for laboratory projects?

IMPACTPRO project formats are based around 1220 mm sheet widths. Typical heights across the range can include 2440, 2800 and 3050 mm, subject to selected finish and current availability. Final product format and jointing route should be confirmed at quotation stage.
